Lok Sabha Election 2024: The selection committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet today (14 March 2024) afternoon to appoint two election commissioners. This meeting will start at around 12 noon. After selecting two names, the selection committee will send them to the President. President Draupadi Murmu Will appoint two new commissioners of the Election Commission (ECI) on the basis of the recommendation of the selection committee.

If sources are to be believed, a search committee held a meeting under the leadership of Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Wednesday (13 March) evening. In this, a panel of five candidates was prepared. However, if the selection committee wishes, it can announce the name of someone other than the candidates included in the panel as the Election Commissioner.

Apart from two Election Commissioners, there is a Chief Election Commissioner in the Election Commission. Actually, on February 14, Anup Chandra Pandey had retired from the post of Election Commissioner. In such a situation, one post was vacant. Meanwhile, Arun Goyal had also resigned from the post of Election Commissioner on March 9. After the resignation of Arun Goyal, both the posts of Election Commissioner are vacant in the Election Commission. At present, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar is the only member of the Election Commission.

Under this, now only the selection committee headed by the PM will select them. Apart from the PM, there will be a Union Minister and the leader of the opposition in this committee. If we talk about the old rules, then the appointment of election commissioners was recommended by the President.

Two commissioners were appointed for the first time in 1989

Earlier there was only Chief Election Commissioner in the Election Commission, but later their number was increased to two. The first two additional commissioners were appointed on 16 October 1989. His tenure lasted till January 1, 1990. Later, on October 1, 1993, two additional election commissioners were appointed.
